Top Testing Trends for 2021
#1 Adopting a Twenty First Century Methodology Mindset
Virtech has noted continued interest from Organisations in adopting practices such as Agile and DevOps in response to the ever-changing requirements and technology proliferation, all of which are linked to quality demands.
What Virtech has also noted is those same Organisations struggle with the adoption of methods and processes. Virtech have been packaging our Test Automation as a Service (TAaaS) around two key principles:
- Keep the transition roadmap as simple as possible
- Utilisation of our software partner Tricentis’ unique marketplace offering re Model Based Test Automation into existing Organisational techniques and practices
Ultimately, if all stakeholders are not pulling in the same direction, then the adoption of techniques designed to accelerate delivery will be impacted.
#2 Test Smarter, Utilise Test Automation
The implementation of test automation is a must. At Virtech, we utilise test automation within our approach to testing and this has dramatically changed things. Gone are the days where we wait for 18 months until the end of our classic waterfall driven development lifecycle to consider scenarios for inclusion in our regression baseline. Testing must be integrated into all phases of development if organisations are to achieve their aspirational speed to market intentions.
It is no longer a matter of replacing manual testing. At Virtech, we believe it is a matter of absorbing most of the manual test effort into a much leaner, risk focused automation model. As part of that activity, intelligent organisations are also looking at ways to take staff with existing Organisational IP on their transition, along with supplementary expertise as required.
Ultimately, clients want to achieve far greater levels of test automation into their SDLC regardless of methodology. The idea of reuse continues to come up in conversations again and again and we understand clients’ reluctance to throw away technologies and collateral that has required large investment to develop over a number of years. Virtech’s TAaaS incorporates the reuse of existing test collateral into their Automation Roadmap.
#3 Testing with AI
Virtech’s test automation partner Tricentis have been the market leaders in the incorporation of AI and ML for the past 5 or so years, and this has been acknowledged by independent assessment firms such as Gartner and Forrester where they lead the respective Magic quadrants in this area.
Complimenting Tricentis thought leadership on the use of AI/ML is their approach to testing via Model Based Test Automation (MBTA) which employs 21st century thinking in unison with leading technology.
One of the greatest challenges senior test professionals have faced over the past two decades has been to get consistency in the test planning phases and associated activities.
- Having a level of surety around where the top priorities being met as part of test coverage
- have test analysts correctly perform analysis activities; and
- consistency in the production of test collateral
With the advent of AI/ML in the Tricentis test automation software, these three factors have been addressed with prioritised and efficient production of test collateral resulting in a greater focus in the test planning phase being spent on higher areas of risk.
All of which will result in higher quality, better speed to market for customers that decide to utilise Virtech Tricentis Services .
#4 Test Environment Conundrum
The provisioning of test environments has certainly been a thorn in the side of many development and production teams over the years. The days of waiting 3 months to have your ‘virtual’ environment deployed, only for it to fail acceptance testing have been considerably reduced by features such as Tricentis Orchestrated Services Virtualisation (OSV) where you no longer require a whole environment to conduct quality assurance, especially the early phases of dev / test.
At Virtech, we see growth in offering and using cloud-based and containerised test environments with obvious benefits such as having a test harness or stub basically on-hand on-demand! But, as important for us as it is, the incorporation of other project colleagues such as developers and business analysts utilising Tricentis features including OSV much earlier as formal stakeholders in the QA process will result in significant savings to our clients.
